Our new “Grubs ‘N’ Fruit” is an ultra-premium complete diet that is designed to be an alternative to our regular Crested Gecko MRP formula. It features 50% real dried fruit, and 30% insect protein powder. It can be used in rotation with, or be mixed with, our Crested Gecko MRP to provide a more varied diet. This new formula has shown to be particularly attractive to the more carnivorous gecko species such as Giant Geckos (R. leachianus) and Gargoyle Geckos (R. auriculatus). It also gets a great feeding response from juveniles of other gecko species that are more insectivorous as young, such as Crested Geckos (C. ciliatus).We have long recognized the potential of using insect meal/protein powder as an ingredient, but to date, the only available commercial sources have been from China and other parts of Asia. Our quality standards at Repashy have forced us to reject these sources for fear of these insects being raised on agricultural/industrial waste and their potential to become vectors for the transmission of toxins to animals which they are fed to. Also, because of the high fat content of insect meals, they are prone to rancidity and require defatting to increase stability. The industrial way to do this typically uses chemical processes such as hexane extraction. To solve these problems, we have contracted to have insects grown for us right here in the USA, on a diet specified by us, and defatted using our own proprietary cold pressing process. This produces a stable “insect protein powder” that is approximately 60% protein and 10% fat.The insects we have chosen to use are Hermetia illucens, or the Black Soldier Fly Larvae, which are marketed under several brand names such as Phoenix Worms, and Calci-Worms. Our history with this insect species goes to its root in the reptile hobby. Some ten years ago, Allen Repashy was actually responsible for the introduction of the original “Phoenix Worm” into the Reptile trade as a live food item through his collaborative efforts with Dr. Craig Sheppard. These larvae have proven to initiate a great feeding response and have a very high nutritional value when compared to other insects. They are quite high in Calcium, and our protein powder test results have shown that they are approximately 2% Calcium and 1% Phosphorous. A perfect balance!With the introduction of these larvae into the hobby as a feeder insect, we immediately looked into the idea of using them as a source of insect meal, but at the time, production costs, and high demand for the more expensive live insects, prohibited this from becoming a reality. Recently though, with lots of research and development, the growing process has been refined to the point that developing a meal has become potentially economical. It is still a VERY expensive product when compared to other protein ingredients, but we feel that there are enough discerning customers out there now that are willing to purchase an ultra-premium product, that we could finally launch the formula.Grubs ‘N’ Fruit will make a great addition to our line of Gecko Diets. It is not designed to replace our Crested Gecko MRP, but rather to compliment it. Certain species, or individual animals, may prefer it over the standard formula. The sun provides our world and its inhabitants with heat through the terrestrial wavelengths of light termed as Infra-Red-A and Infra-Red-B but not directly with Infra-Red-C which is filtered out by the atmosphere. The terrestrial wavelengths of light are full of energy as the photons of light travel down into our world.
They are then available directly into an animal's dermis where they will deliver energy naturally, we term this as being bio-available. As with all life, plants are reliant on the quantity and quality of energy that is available to them via a light source. The greater the quantity of light, and over a wide enough area equates to better potential results.
A light source of any type can only produce a certain number of photons (parcels/packages of energy) as ‘total light output’. As light travels forwards it starts to spread out to cover a greater area. The further away a lamp is placed, the greater the area is that will be covered with light. This is a sharing or spreading of energy over a target, therefore the measured energy within light becomes weaker the further away a lamp is from the target.
To ensure that we have the maximum amount of light possible entering an enclosure we must use enough diodes, placed at the correct distance from each other and with a suitable spectrum, colour and lumen output.
A reduction in the number of diodes, regardless of rated wattage can equate to ‘zoning’, areas that are very bright and areas that are darker.
We must ensure that all light sources project a ‘flood’, this provides better results and reduces any risk of ocular damage associated with point source lamps.

Correct levels of UV energy
The ProT5 reflector provides a fluid mid-width flood of light and is perfect for providing an easy to measure basking area for any species. However, for ‘shade dwelling’ species such as crested geckos, smaller climbing snakes and amphibians that can easily move upwards close towards the lamp increased energy is found. UV energy is vital of course, but we must be sure that we do not provide UV Indexes that are higher than nature has provided a ‘use for’ and a ‘level of protection against’.
ShadeDwellerPro-Arboreal has been designed to be safe and effective to use over standard meshed-topped vivariums and inside other vivariums where planting/decoration is provided to a close distance to the lamp. This kit will provide the ideal UVI and allow inhabitants to benefit in full from activated colour vision and the natural effective D3 cycle safely. Ferguson zones
ShadeDwellerPro-Arboreal is perfect for shade dwelling species such as Crested Geckos and those species that fall into Ferguson zones 1-2, depending on the distance to basking , climbing ability and require a smaller area of UV energy. For these species when living in larger enclosures and where planting/decoration does not allow open basking very close to the lamp the ShadeDwellerPro 7% lamp would be the correct option at 10-12” in free air or 6-8” when used over a mesh (keep in mind also that black mesh reduces light flow more than stainless. It is always best to check actual energy with a Solarmeter 6.5 index meter).
Allowing species to self-regulate
We should always provide access to UV energy over an area that covers at least the animals whole body, from nose to vent in lizards and the whole snake whilst coiled, of course this basking zone should be matched with equal to or greater access to graduated shade vertically or horizontally or both. In this way the animal can travel to energise under the lamp and self-regulate its exposure naturally. Heavy planting with broadleaf plants will create leaf-scatter patterns of shade and offer good protection, as such if the enclosure is heavily planted and there is some distance between basking and the lamp the ShadeDweller 7% lamp maybe more suitable for achieving optimal UVI per species, please use our free lighting guide to check optimal UVI for your species.
